Canada Bay Cannons U15 Youth Girls v Moore Park Tigers

Round 6, Bat and Ball Oval

Match report by Scott

The Canada Bay Cannons U15 Youth Girls have been on the road and had the last in a series of four “away” games at Bat and Ball Oval against the Moore Park Tigers on Sunday. In glorious sunshine, the girls had a gutsy win.

The match see-sawed throughout the first half with both sides exerting periods of control with some excellent kicking, marking and lots of brutal tackling. Some excellent team play during the middle part of the second quarter gave the Cannons the lead and plenty of momentum at the half time break.

Two excellent centre clearances by the Tigers stunned the Cannons as the scores were drawn level three mins into the third quarter. The Tigers took the lead, which would have been greater if not for some unlucky shots at goal which kept the Cannons in the match. To their credit, the Cannons hung tight and thanks to a miraculous checkside goal on the stroke of three quarter time, the Cannons held a two point lead at the final break.

The Cannons’ Captain Sally, who led by example all day, asked the team for a big lift in the final quarter and the girls responded. Some outstanding ruckwork, centre clearances and team play produced a flurry of quick goals and the Cannons raced out to a 20 point lead midway through the quarter, which put the result beyond doubt.

The gutsy win was the perfect reward for a long stretch of “away” games. Over the past month, the results haven’t always gone our way, but  but the improvement from each of the girls over the journey has been impressive and was complemented by the  massive contribution made from the three3 U12 YG Cannons who fit seamlessly into the team and will benefit no-end from the experience.

A rousing rendition of “See the Cannons Fire Up” was belted out across the city parklands to celebrate the occasion.

The Cannons U15 Youth Girls are up-and-about, loving their footy and looking forward to a big game against the Penshurst Panthers back home at St Luke’s next weekend!
