U15 Canada Bay Cannon Youth Girls v Maroubra Saints

Round 5, Heffron Park

Match report by Scott

The Canada Bay Cannons U15 Youth Girls took on ladder leaders Maroubra Saints in miserable conditions on Sunday Morning at Heffron Park. After a tough slog and the Cannons holding a slender lead for most of the match, to use a fishing analogy, it was the one that got away (unfortunately).  That being said, there were many positives in what was an absolute cracking game of footy!

The Cannons really fired up after a hard couple of weeks and under the leadership of Captain Grace F, played a tough, uncompromising brand of footy in front of a special gathering of Mums keen to celebrate Mother’s Day with a big away win. The girls’ performance continues to illustrate the significant improvement they have made under Coach Michael during the season.

At one stage, the storm force winds, sideways rain and freezing temperature looked like putting a damper on the match, however, the Cannons made the best of the conditions for the majority of the game to take a slim lead into the 3/4 time break.

The more experienced Saints clicked in the final term and although the Cannons defended (and defended some more), it wasn’t enough and the Saints were able to carve out a gritty one-point win.

After the disappointment of coming so close had abated, there were many positives to take from the match. It is significant to note that at one stage, nine of the 15 Cannons on the field were in their first season of AFL, and had played no more than five games each – there were even two who were playing their first game. Despite their inexperience, they were able to match it with the top of the comp! The future is bright!!

There is still a lot of improvement left in the Cannons, but they are loving the contest, loving their footy and can’t wait for a crack at Moore Park this weekend.
