Round 5, Jubilee Oval

Shivering through the first chilly morning of the season, the Canada Bay Cannons Under 10 girls put on an impressive display of teamwork to score a convincing victory in their first game against the Glebe Greyhounds.

Armed with two new stellar recruits – Ella and Skye  – the girls stamped their authority on the game from the outset. The sound of the siren had barely faded when Charlotte powered forward to score a quick behind and she remained a threat the entire quarter, prowling the goal square like a tiger hunting prey.

In a beautiful piece of play, Scarlett stood her ground, shaking off three hard tackling Greyhounds to kick to Ella who marked and handballed like a professional. Sienna dominated in the ruck and under the guidance of Mikayla and Summer, the team controlled the flow of play with hard running and quick passing.

Solid defending by Skye and Evelyn prevented an early attempt at goal by the Cannons in the second quarter and Charlotte’s hard work paid off as she kicked the Cannon’s first goal. The Greyhounds scored two quick goals but Jasmine halted their momentum, tackling with such force that she crashed to the ground before dusting herself off and throwing her body back into play.

Relentless scrambling by Scarlett and Ivy and great speed from the mids landed the ball in Ella’s safe hands as she produced a behind and followed up swiftly with her first goal. Skye showed courage to get the ball away from the pack towards Naomi who scored a confident goal in the dying minute of the third quarter.

The girls showed no signs of slowing down in the final quarter. Impressive marking and kicking by Charlotte and Sienna and fierce tackling by Hayley, Isla and Jasmine kept the girls in front and Naomi brought it home with another impressive goal.

Ivy, Naomi, Hayley and Skye showed lovely sportsmanship, each playing a quarter for their opponents. All the girls can be proud of their performance as this victory was truly a team effort.
