U13-3: Match Report Round 7

Canada Bay Cannons U13-3 v Maroubra Saints

Round 7, St Luke’s Oval

Match report by John

A maiden win for Season 2018!

Last Sunday our Cannons came out firing with an emphatic victory over the Maroubra Saints. It was sweet revenge as the Saints gave us a touch up in the season opener.

The first quarter was very much an arm wrestle, which saw the Saints go in at the break leading  7-1. An unimpressed coach Andrew, gave the boys a good old fashion rev up at the break.

This certainly worked wonders as the boys fired up, posting 27 unanswered points in a dominant second quarter. While it was good to post the points, the most pleasing aspect for Coaches Andrew & Ben, was the unrelenting and scrambling defence that kept the Saints  scoreless for the quarter.

With the wind in their sails, our boys maintained the momentum from the second quarter and posted another 3 goals. At the three quarter break, the scoreboard showed a substantial lead.

Yours truly was telling the boys NOT to look at  the scoreboard and stressing that the game goes for four quarters not three.  Mind you, these were the words coming from a nervous and excited team manager.

The last quarter was a dour affair. Although we only posted one goal, we managed to keep our opponent’s scoreless.

It was certainly a memorable victory, based on pure guts and determination.

Well done to our goal scorers, Harry, Daniel V, Jack, Filip, Lucian & Rohan.

While it is good to acknowledge the great goals, all this would not be possible if it wasn’t for the hard work & defence of our backs. The midfield also played their part in getting the ball into the forward pocket. If anything Sunday’s victory was a  TEAM effort.

Coach Andrew was ecstatic with the victory and acknowledged all the boys on their effort.

The second runner up went to Ollie S, who once again was a tower of strength in the back line, constantly repelling any goal attacks from the Saints forwards. The first runner up went to Rohan who had an awesome day with the boot, kicking a couple of goals and unlucky not to have posted a few more.

The man of the match award went to Anthony.

Andrew mentioned that this was Anthony’s best game of the year as he was in the thick of things in both attack and defence.

While we have acknowledged the runners up and man of the match, on the back of an awesome victory it would be remiss of me not to mention ALL of our Cannons , as they ALL had outstanding games!!

So Congratulations and well done: Jacob, Harry, Patrick C, Oliver R, Viren, Chris, Patrick R, Jack, Daniel V, James, Phoenix, Finn, Rameez,Lucian, Nirvan and Filip!!!!

A memorable victory indeed, hopefully we can build on this for the rest of the season.

Canada Bay Cannons U12-3 v St Ives

Round 6, Acron Oval

It was a brilliant sunny day at Acron Oval St Ives for the boys’ first afternoon game of the season.

Q1: Cannons started strong, hard defence and transitioned the ball extremely through midfield. St Ives put up a great defensive effort early however the Cannons tackling kicking and passing was on song. Kicking 3 goals 2 behinds ending the quarter with a 19 point lead (20 vs 1).

Q2: With our confidence high, the Cannons dominated the second quarter shutting down the St Ives attack. Great work and effort displayed from the boys in our midfield and back positions. Through gritty defence and determination to win the ball in the rucks, the Cannons pushed forward and the boys playing up front took advantage by slotting home 2 goals and 3 behinds extending the lead to 35 points to 2 heading in to half time.

Q3: Cannons came out for the second half and continued to push forward holding St Ives within their own half for majority of the quarter. The Cannons supported and chased hard, never letting up. The boys in the centre did a great job in closing down St Ives and stopping the ball being pushed forward and winning a majority of ball ups by the umpire during stoppages.

Q4: St Ives came out in the last quarter and lifted limiting the opportunity Cannons had in front of goal and spoiling our attacking efforts. St Ives managed to get a couple of goals as the boys slowed after the effort during the previous 3 quarters caught up with them but still managed to win the game by a comfortable margin.

U12-3 Orange: Round 5 Match Report

Canada Bay Cannons U12-3 Orange v East Sydney Bulldogs Red

St Luke’s Oval, Round 5

Despite best efforts, the boys fell short to the consistency of the Bulldogs.

I noticed that the kicking accuracy had improved greatly, and our boys were finding the target more often. Several fantastic marks in a thrilling game to watch, with team Orange continually fighting back against the Reds.

The boys were calling more often to their counterparts and giving themselves plenty of space. They were using the whole ground more effectively and continually applying pressure. Fitness has improved markedly over the past few weeks. There were less errors and they were taking more risks.

Up until this match, the boys were top of the table and this is a real testament to Anthony’s enthusiasm and in-depth knowledge of the game as our coach.

Match Highlights:
• Our forwards started strongly with some solid kicking by Luke B
• Luke T fired back with a great 6-pointer
• Jasper was on the ball constantly
• Toby kept up his reputation for solid tackling and winning the ball-ups
• Damien was the most consistent player on the field
• Denver took an impressive mark in the second quarter
• Some great kicking and handballs from Alexander H
• As usual, Aiden and Alexander P were all over the defence
• A jaw-dropping long-range kick from Russell
• Siam was fearless in defence with some solid marks

Looking forward to having Felix ‘the hammer’ back next weekend

Round 4 U12-3 Orange vs Mosman Swans

It was a perfect Autumn morning with clear skies and the sun shining. The smoke haze earlier had cleared and the sun had dried up the morning dew. It was 9:15am when the mighty U12-3 Orange Cannons began arriving at St Luke’s Oval. After a warm up the team donned their jerseys ready for Round 4 against the Mosman Swans.

Q1

At 09:45 the game had begun. Ball up! It wasn’t long before Cooper H took a great mark in the midfield off a Mosman kick. Siam P showed his tenacity with a chase and tackle to win the ball. Denver P took two terrific marks and was pushing the ball forward. Luke T combined with Cooper H in moving the ball forward with marks to each. It wasn’t long before the first points of the day were scored by Alex P with a behind. The Cannons were on the board. With 3 mins to go Lachlan W kicked the first goal of the day. At this point the Swans switched gears to score a minute later and then again 20 sec before quarter time. The Cannons trailed the Swans at quarter time 7 to 12.

Q2

After some encouraging words from the Coach, Q2 began. What was said seemed to have worked, as 40 sec later, Damien L took a great mark and kicked our second goal of the day. The boys were fired up! Lucca B got the ball ran around some idle Swans players, bounced and ran another 20 meters before launching the ball forward. All the boys were involved in the offensive. Hamish R with a mark and Siam P with a shot on goal for a behind. There were also great defence displayed at times with Aidan P and Ethan S double teaming a Swans player. Bailey W was committed in contesting the ball and showed his tackling prowess. The Cannons had the bulk of the possession in the Quarter until 5 mins to go when the Swans broke through kicking two quick goals. Alex H and Bailey W were gallant in defence protecting our goal with great tackling and assists. Unfortunately however, the Swans scored their third goal for the quarter 20 secs before half time extending their lead over the Cannons by 15 points.

Q3

Coach Anthony spoke to the team about their walking on the field and not manning up, during the half time break. Q3 began as Q2 had ended, with the Swans scoring another goal. Our boys then picked up their game. Toby D marked the ball and kicked a behind. This was to begin the comeback we all knew they could pull off. Bailey W kicked the ball, which was marked by Toby D. Toby D scored a 6 pointer. Luke B followed Toby’s example and also kicked a behind and a goal off a terrific mark. Lucca B continued to torment the opposition with great skills and bursts of speed from the ruck. There was also some great support play from Jasper C, Mikhail D and Kaelan S. At the end of the quarter the Swans were still leading, but we had closed the gap to 8

Q4

The final quarter was destined to be a cracker! Lucca B was exceptional once again, marking the ball, charging forward and scoring a goal. Russell P excelled with hustling for the ball  as did Alex H. One of the plays of the day was when Luke T tackled a Swan and received a free kick. This was marked by Denver P whose kick was then marked by Lucca B. Although Lucca’s shot on goal had just fallen short, they were playing like a team. Shortly after, Denver then combined with Cooper H and Luke T nearly scoring. The pressure was mounting against the Swans. It was only a matter of time. With 6 mins to go, Lucca B managed a behind, bringing us within a point of the Swans. The Cannons could smell victory. With two and half minutes to go a free kick was awarded to Lachlan W who made no mistake in putting the ball between the middle sticks. Cooper H scored the final point of the day with 2 secs remaining on the clock. The Mighty Cannons had done it to win 44 to 38.

The boys started slow and lost their way a little in the second quarter. They recovered well in the third quarter and finished strongly in the fourth with some great defence. There were some brilliant individual efforts, but when our boys marked up and combined as a team we saw the ball move forward, putting pressure on the opposition and then ultimately winning the day. Congratulations to the boys for a fantastic effort and keeping their winning streak alive with their fourth straight win of the season.
