Cannons U15 Youth Girls v Maroubra Saints
Drummoyne Oval, Round 12
Match report by Scott
It was a celebration of Youth Girls footy at Drummoyne Oval for Round 12 and the 15YG Cannons were the hottest ticket in town with an outstanding win over the ladder leading Maroubra Saints. Determined to make amends after the infamous “Mothers Day Tragedy”, the Cannons were back to their best in front of a large and very vocal home crowd.
Led magnificently by Captain Grace F, complemented ably by “The Voice”, the Cannons took control of the game early on and quickly established a lead. The girls put all the lessons learned from their recent mentoring from the Sydney Swans and GWS Giants into practice, which rattled the Saints early on.
The week’s training session, which focused on ruckwork, contested football and goalkicking, bore fruit and these skills were performed with precision on game day by a team who was determined not to compromise on the result.
The Cannons did the hard work in the first half and at the main break held a valuable advantage. To the Saints’ credit, they were able to rally after half time and squared the third quarter with their trademark hardness at the footy. But at three quarter time, the Cannons held a 4 1/2 goal lead and a repeat of Mothers Day never looked possible as the girls played the match right to the end with their trademark toughness.
It was arguably their best win of the season. The Cannons remain undefeated at home this season and with another game at Drummoyne Oval next weekend against the Moore Park Tigers, the girls will be aim to hotly contested run to the finals in one of the closest competitions in the league.
