That’s a wrap!
In chilly conditions, our Cannons took the field for the last time in Round 15 as we took another competition heavyweight, the Manly Bombers. And didn’t our Cannons come out with all guns blazing.
The first quarter was definitely an arm wrestle with Bombers managing a solitary behind. Our boys scrambled hard in defence and forced our opponents into many errors. To keep our opponents goalless for the quarter was a huge feat. At the break, Coach Andrew was ecstatic with the performance of our gutsy Cannons.
The second quarter saw the best from our Cannons.
The boys just ripped in, tackled hard, chased hard for the ball and gave our more fancied opponents no respite whatsoever. As a result, we posted two awesome goals courtesy of Jack and Phoenix. At the halftime break our mighty Cannons were up 12 -9 and an upset was on the cards.
Unfortunately, the third quarter saw the Bombers get the jump on us and took the lead at the break.
We had no fresh reserves to call upon and this certainly took its toll on our boys as fatigue kicked in.
At the break, Coach Andrew was a happy man, although we were behind, the boys never gave up. The coach’s instruction to the boys was to make the last quarter of the season count!!!
And didn’t our boys make it count, keeping the bombers to one behind while Harry kicked the goal of the match from out wide!!
The scoreboard may have shown that we lost the game, but WE WERE WINNERS!!
I have been managing teams for the past six years and yesterday’s effort would rank number one of all time!!
The fact that we played the team coming second, they had three reserves while we had none, plus this team posted a big score on us earlier in the season, just proves that this Cannons team is a team of champions!
Echoing Andrew’s comments at the end of the game, I felt had we had all our troops on board, we would have won that game – even the opposition coach and manager commented on how well our boys played!!!
Coach Andrew had another difficult task in naming best on ground as ALL of our Cannons deserved this award.
Special mentions went to Roan, who in his first year of AFL, had a great game chased hard for the ball and was always a danger in attack.
Will ,was in thick of things and got among the action. His game has improved big time.
Viren, another solid game in defence.
On the back of a special game, Coach Andrew had three runner up awards.
Jack, another huge game in the ruck, and topped it off with a neat goal.
Daniel V, proving to be a versatile player covering just about every position on the footy field.
Chris, tackled himself to a standstill and chased hard all day.
Best on ground went to Patrick R, who got some big clearing kicks out of the danger zone and was another who tackled his heart out. Well done Patrick.
To the rest of the U13-3 Cannons, you should all be applauded on your efforts and once again it would be remiss of me not to name you in the final wrap.
So kudos to Phoenix, Nirvan, Jacob, Daniel G, Filip, Finn, Ollie S and Rameez!! Well done!!!
Sadly this is the last wrap for the season.
Firstly, I would like to thank our coaches Andrew and Ben for their hard work and getting the boys up for every game. They have done a terrific job.
To the parents of U13-3, I would like to thank you for ALL of your help and support throughout the season. It has been truly amazing and made my job as team manager so much easier and was very much appreciated.
To our Under 13-3 Cannons, what an awesome bunch of boys.
They endured some hard times this season, but their resilience to bounce back each week was absolutely amazing.
This team of champions certainly adopted the GWS Giants motto, “NEVER SURRENDER”.
They also epitomise the true meaning of sportsmanship both on and off the field.
So congratulations to Harry, Jacob, Anthony, Patrick C, Lucian, Roan, Daniel G, Chris, Filip, Jamie, Finn, Phoenix, Viren, Patrick R, Oliver R, Jack, Nirvan, Oliver S, Will, Daniel V and Rameez.
Well done, boys, on your season. You certainly showed pride in the Cannons jumper!
