Canada Bay Cannons U13-3 v Easts
Round 14, Trumper Park
For Round 14, we ventured out to Trumper Park where, once again, we took on the competition leaders East Sydney.
The points may not have gone our way, but our Cannons dug deep and pushed the Bulldogs at every quarter.
The first quarter started well and was very much an arm wrestle , however the Bulldogs got the jump on us towards the end of the quarter and established a healthy lead at the first break.
At the break, both coaches stressed the importance of marking players and giving the opposition too much space.
The second quarter saw our Cannons lift their intensity, with close marking and sticking to structure, we managed to post three amazing goals. A double from our ruckman come forward, Jack and one from Harry. The boys tackled hard and at times had our more fancied opponents rattled.
In the third quarter, the boys continued their strong tackling and marking.
The highlight was Phoenix posting his first goal of the season.
The final quarter was very much a quarter of missed opportunities where we kicked one goal and seven behinds.
Had we converted those behinds to goals, we would have gone close to posting an upset win of the competition leaders.
Daniel V’s radar was on song as he posted that goal for the quarter.
At the completion of the game, the Bulldog’s coach commented on how it was a great game to watch.
Two weeks ago this same team inflicted quite a heavy defeat on our boys.
To our credit and because of our ‘never say die’ attitude, our Cannons turned up to play, fought hard for the ball and as always tackled their hearts out. it was a truly inspirational effort against a team that will probably win this year’s comp.
Very much a cliché, but the best on ground could have gone to any of our boys, as they ALL gave it their best.
Coach Andrew made special mention of all the boys who played in the centre, as they all contested hard for the ball, and of the entire backline, who defended grimly under constant pressure.
Great games had by Lucian, who was on his game and chased hard for the ball; Daniel V, who played 3-4 positions and was rewarded with a handy goal in the final quarter and Jack, for another consistent effort in the ruck and posting a double for the game.
Second runner up for best on ground went to Lucian, for his whole hearted effort and getting among the action.
First runner up went to Jacob, who marked well, chased and tackled hard, and basically epitomise the spirit of this team by never giving up.
Best on ground went to Phoenix, whose game has been improving every week. Phoenix attacked the ball at every opportunity, kept his composure and topped of his game with his first goal. Awesome work, Phoenix.
On the back of their efforts, I feel the rest of the boys should get a mention as they stuck it to the competition leaders. So well done to Rameez, Ollie , Oliver, Jamie, Will, Daniel G, Nirvan, Harry, Patrick C, Chris, Filip, Patrick R, Roan & Viren.
