U15Youth Girls: Round 4 Match Report

Match report by Coach Michael

On Sunday 6 May, the under 15-2 Youth Girls  travelled back to Jubilee Oval to face the rampaging Glebe Greyhounds again.

The previous Sunday the girls had played the same team, at the same venue, and went down 10.4-64 to 3.4-22, against a side filled with seven Swans Academy players. With their first defeat of the season, we returned to training with renewed focus and worked hard on our defence, clearing the ball in the back pocket as well as some forward leading drills.

Game day arrived and the girls were more focused in their warm up, which really showed in the first quarter. They restricted the Greyhounds to only a couple of behinds and fought tooth and nail for the ball. The backs worked together as a unit to clear the ball out of danger and the whole team defended and marked hard. The second quarter turned out to be a repeat of the first with only a goal and few behinds conceded.

During the third quarter, through their dogged defence, the Cannons managed to slip the ball forward into attack and managed a few shots on goal. Unfortunately the football gods were not smiling on us that day, and we only managed a few behinds. The Greyhounds regrouped, and with some very good kicking and marking skills, punished us with some quick response goals.

The Cannons fought hard into the fourth quarter; however a lack of any reserves meant the girls were getting tired while the Greyhounds were running two reserves. The score blew out slightly in the fourth, and the Greyhounds were helped home by an enthusiastic home crowd cheering them on. The final score of 6.7-43 to 0.5-5 reflected the Cannons improved defence from the previous week.
